Why 'First Fruits' ?

First Fruits are historically known as the best of the harvest. The bible talks about a Jewish feast where the first fruits offering needed to be given before any of the crop could be harvested.

In the New Testament, James 1:18 says; "Of His own will he brought us forth by the word of the truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of His creatures."
First Fruits Coffee is built upon God as our foundation.


Our Story

Our head roaster is Dan Smith. He first developed a passion for coffee while still serving in the Army.  Forced to retire from infantry due to back injuries, he worked in the club attached to the 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, the beginning of his passion for coffee. When he entered the club he quickly took on the role of head barista, serving about 16kg per week. By the time he left a year later he had become assistant manager, the club now serving 40-50kg of coffee a week as well as craft beers and a selection of foods.


Our Coffee

Coffee is an art form.
Like many art forms, there are a lot of ways to express your love for coffee. We believe in ensuring our beans are ethically sourced. We do our own research and don't take the "ethical trade models" at face value, as some of them aren't working towards the best interests of the farmers. We believe that the coffee you buy should be 100% great product, with no low grade beans to "fill in" the roast. We have a passion for coffee, and want to ensure that all baristas that serve our coffee and represent our brand are highly trained. We are also committed to ensuring the home consumer can enjoy our coffee at the same standard, and are working on videos to teach everybody the secrets to extracting the maximum potential from our unique flavours. 

All of our coffee is roasted medium or city roast style. At First Fruits, we believe this level of roast really brings out the flavours the coffee has to offer. If you're after a coffee with that 'strong coffee' taste, sorry, we're not for you. We feel that roasting coffee at that level can over caramelise the sugars and damage the bean. A nice analogy is that of toast; if you have two pieces of toast, one cooked golden brown and one with some black bits on it, then eating the golden brown gives you the opportunity to taste the bread, what kind it is, and where it's come from, whereas eating the burnt toast will just always give you a bland charcoal taste no matter what. This is the First Fruits coffee philosophy, and if you don't feel the same, please don't be offended, remember to drink what you love!

The beverage is based on beans that have been grown in an accurately defined area, and which meet the highest standards for green coffee and for its roasting, storage and brewing.”
